Claire Walsh, General Assistant

Originally I applied to the Graduate Management programme but was unfortunately unsuccessful in gaining a place. I was therefore delighted to be offered a job as a General Assistant. One of the great advantages of working for Shire Hotels was the opportunity to do the Food and Drink Academy. This opportunity has now arisen and I am at the point where I am able to take up a place on this course.

I have only been with Shire six months now but i've managed to gain experience in a number of departments. The Academy will allow me to not only network with colleagues from other hotels in the Shire group, but also help me understand the symmetries between food and wine and the whole dining experience. It will also help to fill my lack of knowledge in the restaurant side of the business.

The program has been highly recommended to me by a number of Shire employees. I am looking forward to working with Kendal College, gaining nationally recognised qualifications and learning first hand from professionals and suppliers in the industry. i hope to continue developing my knowledge and skills of the hotel industry and become a truly valuable and experienced asset to Shire Hotels.

I therefore feel not only privileged to be chosen to attend this unique experience but also look forward to gaining knowledge in such a specialised and beneficial environment.
